BOX ART BY MIKE

Welcome to Box Art by Mike, where each unique artwork is handmade by myself.
As an artist, I produce miniature stage sets where big themes can be reimagined into new stories.
With this in mind, I aim to create artworks that launch a discussion and inspire.
My Story
Birkenhead, England, 1960.
I was born into a world of absurdity, specifically a world where everyone is either living in a box house, driving a box car, or working in an office box.
As with all artists, I started collecting early, gathering a BA in Fine Art at Nottingham, then later acquiring an MA in Film Animation at the Royal College of Art, London.

In 2004 I emigrated to Australia with my family where we reside in our own box house in Brisbane.
Here I create (yes, you guessed it) box art, driven by a lifelong interest in antiques, collectables, found objects, and used items.
I juxtapose these to create an imagined world of miniatures, sometimes in harmony, other times in conflict.

Some of these absurd combinations include:
A rendezvous in outer space for opposing astronauts
A zoo for sinking islands
A football ground for lost lovers

My practice is also informed by my former career as an animator and filmmaker. The three dimensional box construction acts as a film set or theatre, allowing the mind to shift between diverse themes and associations. These include our changing planet, space travel, and the nature of creation.
